Day 1:Nairobi- Mt Kenya

Departure from Nairobi for Mt Kenya about 175km North-East of Nairobi arriving in time for lunch. Afternoon birding along the nearby forest trails or waits for wildlife at nearby salt-lick. Overnight at a camp or Lodge.

Mt. Kenya National Park is most famous for .... Mt. Kenya, an extinct volcano and the second highest mountain in Africa. Like the Aberdares, Mt Kenya is an important water catchment area since the area not only has snow covered peaks but also very high rainfall. The habitat is a mix of rain forest, bamboo, open woodland, scrub, moorland as well as the high altitude rock peaks. It has a number of globally and regionally threatened species some of which it has in common with the Aberdares, but it is also home to the Lesser Kestrel, the Purple-throated Cuckoo-shrike and is one of the few remaining areas in Kenya where the Lammergeier can still be seen.

Day 2: Mt Kenya

After breakfast drive to slopes of Mt Kenya through numerous vegetation zones and onto 10,000 ft. Afro- alpine moorland. Return on afternoon for bird walk along the river line forests. Overnight at a camp or Lodge.

DaY 3-4: Rift Valle

Early morning departure over the Great Rift Valley onto on to wildlife sanctuary. Outstanding night game drives & nature/bird walks which is a truly memorable locality. Famous for flamingos, Pelicans and water birds but equally rich in Narina Trogon, Arrow-marked Babbler and Red -headed weaver, Hildebrand's Francolin, Montane and Dusky Night jars. Full day visit to Lake Nakuru National Park. Two overnights at a lodge or camp.

The Kenya Lake in the Great Rift Valley , a natural property of outstanding beauty, comprises three inter-linked relatively shallow lakes (Lake Bogoria, Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita) in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya and covers a total area of 32,034 hectares. The property is home to 13 globally threatened bird species and some of the highest bird diversities in the world. It is the single most important foraging site for the lesser flamingo anywhere, and a major nesting and breeding ground for great white pelicans. The property features sizeable mammal populations, including black rhino, Rothschild's giraffe, greater kudu, lion, cheetah and wild dogs.

DaY 5-6 :Rift Valley

A short drive past hot springs of lake Bogoria and into lake Baringo. Afternoon boat excursion to view Hippo, Crocodiles and water birds at close range. Dark Chanting Goshwak, Silverbird, Cliffchats, Jackson's and Yellow-billed hornbills, brown- tailed Rock Chat, Bristle-crowned Startling, Verreaux Eagle and Spotted Eagle Owl. Overnight at a lodge or camp.

Day 7-8: Rift valley-Kakamega

Full day drive over Tugen hills, through the valley and Serikwa plateau and finally to Kakamega forest. Specialties include Great Blue Turaco , Emerald Cuckoo ,Blue Headed Bee Eater, Black and White Casked Hornbill, Black-billed and Viellot's Black Weavers. Overnight at a lodge or camp.

The birdlife of the Kakamega is a fascinating and unique combination of central African lowland species (which dominate the list) sitting alongside highland species. It is probable that at least 45 of the species on the Kenya list are to be found only in the Kakamega. It is the last refuge in Kenya of the Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) which is present in very low numbers (probably fewer than 10 individuals) and is close to being extirpated (locally extinct). Two other species, Turner's Eremomela (Eremomela turneri) and Chapin's' Flycatcher (Muscicapa lendu), are globally threatened and a further 15 species are regionally-threatened. Amongst the Kakamega specials are Ansorge's Greenbul (Andropadus ansorgei kavirondensis), the Blue-headed Bee-eater (Merops muelleri muelleri), the Red-chested Owlet (Glaucidium tephronotum elgonense), Shelley's Greenbul (Andropadus masukuensis kakamegae), Grey-chested Illadopsis (Kakamega poliothorax), Brown Illadopsis (Illadopsis fulvescens ugandae) and the Green-throated Sunbird (Nectarinia rubescens kakamegae).

The Forest Reserve is situated 48km North of Kisumu and 42km South of the Trans African Highway at Webuye. It is approximately 418 km from Nairobi and there is a small airstrip 4km outside Kakamega town. Accommodation in the reserve is limited and mostly very basic. There is a guesthouse, self-help bandas, a couple of campsites and the Rondo Retreat. The Retreat, managed by the Trinity Fellowship, is the most comfortable of the places mentioned and is actually a retreat centre for quiet prayer and contemplation for members of the fellowship. It provides full board in cottages in pleasant grounds, however, while there is a dining room alcoholic drinks are not offered for sale (although they aren't banned from the premises).

Day 9-12: Kakamega-Maasai Mara

After breakfast, drive past Lake Victoria to the Masai Mara game reserve is a fascinating ecosystem covering 1,500sq km of Savannah, grasssland, woodlands and riverine forests. It is inhabited by the "Big five", as well as a diversiy of other plain game and arich variety of bird life., All the Big Five are available here. Nature walks alongside a Maasai guide.
